For more than twenty years, Riad Tizwa has welcomed travellers seeking a genuine experience of Morocco. We believe that tourism should benefit local communities, preserve cultural heritage and minimise its impact on the environment.
As a small independent business, our approach to sustainability is based on practical actions rather than promises. We continually look for ways to reduce our environmental footprint while supporting the people, traditions and communities that make Morocco such a special place to visit.
Our riads are located within historic medinas and traditional Moroccan buildings. By restoring and maintaining these properties, we help preserve local architecture, craftsmanship and cultural heritage for future generations.
Where possible, restoration work is carried out using traditional materials and local artisans whose skills have been passed down through generations.
We are proud to employ local staff and work with local suppliers, guides, artisans and small businesses.
From the food served at breakfast to the recommendations we make for restaurants, shops and excursions, we strive to ensure that tourism spending remains within the local economy and benefits the wider community.
We encourage responsible use of water and energy throughout our properties.
Measures include:
Energy-efficient lighting where practical
Careful management of water consumption
Reuse and recycling initiatives where local facilities permit
Reducing unnecessary waste and single-use plastics
Encouraging guests to reuse towels and linens during longer stays
While we recognise that sustainability is an ongoing journey, we are committed to making improvements wherever possible.
One of the most rewarding aspects of travel is meaningful cultural exchange.
We encourage guests to experience Morocco through its food, architecture, art, music, history and traditions. Our team is always happy to recommend locally owned businesses, cultural experiences and lesser-known places that help visitors connect with the country in an authentic way.
We ask our guests to travel thoughtfully and respectfully by:
Supporting local businesses and artisans
Respecting local customs and traditions
Conserving water and energy where possible
Minimising waste
Treating our staff, neighbours and fellow travellers with kindness and respect
Responsible tourism is not a destination but a continual process of learning and improvement.
As we move forward, we remain committed to protecting the character of our historic properties, supporting our local communities and providing memorable stays that have a positive impact on the places we call home.
Thank you for helping us travel more responsibly.
A further enhancement, which would feel very credible for Riad Tizwa, would be to add a short section entitled “What We Already Do” beneath this policy. You have a genuine story that many larger hotels cannot match:
Independently owned and operated since 2005.
Long-term employment of local staff.
Restoration and preservation of traditional Moroccan buildings.
Promotion of locally owned restaurants, cafés, guides and artisans.
Reduction of single-use plastics wherever possible.
Participation in recognised sustainability programmes, including your Green Key/Clef Verte journey.
Encouraging slower, longer stays that support the local economy.
Those real-world actions tend to resonate far more with guests than generic sustainability claims. They also reinforce the character of Riad Tizwa as a thoughtful, locally rooted business rather than a conventional hotel brand.
