Marrakech and Fes, two of Morocco’s most popular destinations, are not only known for their stunning architecture and rich culture, but also for their mouth-watering cuisine. Vegetarian and vegan travelers are in for a treat as both cities offer a variety of flavorful plant-based options. Here are some of the best vegetarian and vegan food and restaurants in Marrakech and Fes that we have come across in the last few years.
Marrakech
1. Some Concept Store: Please take our word for this one… SOME is an elegant furniture and interior store, but tucked away at the back of the store there is a wee garden café restaurant that is a cool, organic, local artisanal joy to withhold.
2. Le Jardin: This beautiful restaurant is located in a lush riad setting and offers a mix of Moroccan and international cuisine. The menu includes vegan options like vegetable tagine, lentil soup, and a mezze platter with hummus, baba ghanoush, and other dips.
3. Cafe des Epices: This long established cool cafe is a popular spot for lunch or a mid-afternoon snack. They offer a variety of vegetarian and vegan options like vegetable couscous, lentil salad, and roasted eggplant with tahini sauce. The rooftop terrace offers a stunning view of the Medina and is a great place to relax and people-watch – especially at sun down. Great views to the mountains too.
4. Nomad – This rooftop restaurant in the heart of the medina offers stunning views of the medina and has great vegetarian dishes like roasted beetroot salad, grilled halloumi cheese, and vegetable tagine.
And as we write this, the Mandala Society has now opened in Essaouira and Marrakech! Not cheap but well worth a look.
Fes
1. Cafe Clock – This quirky cafe in the heart of the medina (but easy to find) offers a vegetarian menu with a twist, including dishes like the Clock chermoula sandwich made with roasted vegetables and a spicy Moroccan marinade. (for meat eaters – do go for the camel burger).
2. Fondouk Bazaar – A magnificent new addition to the medina, that is elegant, simple, quirky and just good food. Expect a modern take on Moroccan cuisine and good flavours – that will get you away from the usual tagine lifestyle.
3. Restaurant Nur – This restaurant offers a variety of Moroccan and Mediterranean dishes made with fresh, locally sourced ingredients. The lentil soup and vegetable tagine are particularly good.
No matter where you choose to eat, be sure to try some of Morocco’s famous mint tea or nous nous (coffee) and indulge in some sweet treats like the traditional Moroccan pastry, pastille AND especially the gazelle (with almond paste and rose water). Also, keep a special look out for Lubia (white beans); Ladizz (lentils), and Zaalouk (Cooked Eggplant).
Marrakech and Fes are both fantastic destinations for vegetarian and vegan travelers, with a variety of delicious options available at restaurants throughout both cities. Whether you’re in the mood for a casual lunch or a fancy dinner, you’re sure to find something delicious to eat and with a little bit of additional research, you can find a variety of plant-based options that will satisfy your cravings and allow you to experience the delicious flavors of Moroccan cuisine.
